The Mount Ida College women's soccer team dropped their seventh Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss of the season to visiting Johnson & Wales University 2-0 on a chilly Saturday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs slide to 2-8-2, and remain winless in the GNAC at 0-7-1 while the Wildcats improve to 8-3, 5-2 in conference play.
The Mustangs controlled most of the first half getting the first legitimate opportunity to score around the 15 minute mark. Mount Ida freshman Elena Ooms (Valatie, NY/Ichobod Crane) powered a shot towards the top right corner of the net that was denied by Wildcat junior goalkeeper Kory Blythe (Fall River, MA/Bristol CC).
Johnson & Wales struck immediately following the Mustang opportunity with the first score of the game. A give and go from sophomore Samantha Reynolds (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North) to junior Colleen Marasco (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) set the scoring chance. Marasco fired a picture perfect shot into the top right hand corner of the net for the 1-0 advantage at the 38 minute mark. The half ended with the visitors holding a strong 1-0 lead.
It didn't take long for the Wildcats to add to their lead in the 49th minute in the start of the second half. Reynolds collected a deflected ball at the top of the 18 yard box and crushed a shot into the top right corner of the net for the 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs just could not get anything going offensively against the Wildcats dropping their eighth loss of the season and their seven in GNAC play. Johnson & Wales snap a two game losing streak with the victory.
Mount Ida goalkeeper Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) denied two shots for the Mustangs while Blythe stopped seven for the Wildcats.
Mount Ida will travel to GNAC member Norwich University this coming Monday in Norwich, Vermont starting at 3:00 p.m.
