MUSTANGS NOTCH 1-1 TIE IN GNAC PLAY VERSUS FALCONS

MUSTANGS NOTCH 1-1 TIE IN GNAC PLAY VERSUS FALCONS

In the opening three minutes of the first overtime, Mustang junior Elizabeth Sutton (Norton, MA/Norton) missed a penalty kick after an intentional hand ball in the box  by visiting Albertus Magnus College that resulted in a red card  handing the Mount Ida College women's soccer team a 1-1 double overtime tie this Saturday in Newton, MA.  The Mustangs record goes to 3-9-2, 1-7-1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) while the Falcons stay at 4-9-3, 2-7-2 in conference play.

Mount Ida struck first in the 43rd minute in the first half on a cross by junior Katie Lorenco (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester) to the head of sophomore Lauren Garnick (Boxford, MA/Masconomet) who tucked the ball into the left corner for her first goal of the season.  This gave the Mustangs the outright 1-0 advantage over the Falcons going into the break.

Unfortunately for the hosts, the visitors converted their own goal to knot the score at 1-1 off a corner kick that was initially blocked by Mount Ida back-up keeper freshman Kelsea Curtis- Ney (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown), but an unlikely bounce to the foot of Falcon sophomore Jenna Riccio (North Branford, CT/North Branford) who hammered in the tying goal making it 1-1 in the 79th minute.  The contest would head into overtime.

In the opening ticks of the first overtime, Mustang senior Lisa Tucker (Norton, MA/Norton) laced a ball onto an open net that was intentionally hand balled in the box by Falcon freshman Ashley Vargo (Orange, CT/Amity Regional) resulting immediately in an automatic red card.

This gave Mount Ida a penalty kick to put away the game for good.  Sutton lined up the penalty kick and smacked a shot off the left post that was struck again on the rebound by Tucker that was stuffed by Albertus keeper sophomore Christina Oddo (East Haven, CT/East Haven).  Neither team could convert for the rest of the extra time handing both squads the 1-1 conference tie.

Mustang goaltender Curtis-Ney denied 14 shots by the opposition while Falcon goalie Oddo stopped 16.  Mount Ida outshot the visitor 28-20 throughout the contest.

The Mustangs have their three remaining regular season games at home, their next contest coming this Tuesday, hosting St. Joseph College (CT) starting at 3:30 p.m.
