NEWTON, Mass. – Seniors Briana Barker (Westerly, R.I.) and Samantha Basler (Plymouth, Mass.) were recognized at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon before Mount Ida and Norwich met in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest.
Mount Ida put together a great comeback effort to erase an 11-6 deficit and tied the game at 11, but couldn't get their noses completely in front and fell 15-14 to the Cadets in their home finale.
Freshman Alyssa Kelly (Lee, Mass.) lit up the scoresheet with nine goals, seven of them in the second half for the Mustangs, while Chapel Garnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) scored six times and Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) notched five goals for Norwich.
Kelly scored the first two goals of Mount Ida's run that started at 22:53 left in the second half. The game stayed tied at 12-12 after Kelly answered Guarnieri's tally, but Guarnieri scored the next two goals for the Cadets and Albretsen added what would eventually be the game-winner on a free position shot with 1:39 left to play.
Albretsen scored four straight goals in the span of seven minutes to help the Cadets turn a 2-2 tie game into a 7-2 advantage, though two goals from Kelly were enough to trim the Mustang deficit to 8-4 by halftime.
Freshman Jackie Tarsook (Derry, N.H.) made nine saves in the loss for Mount Ida, while her counterpart and fellow first year Jay Bolton (Stow, Mass.) made three stops for the Cadets.
Basler, who is currently third all-time in games started and second in career draw controls, ended the game with three draw controls, while Barker picked up two ground balls, where she will end her career in the top ten in the Mustang record books.
Larissa Gokey (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) scored twice for the Cadets, while Nicole Pavao (Peabody, Mass.) and Anabelle Dentino (Maynard, Mass.) tallied for the Mustangs, with Dentino collecting her first career goal.
Mount Ida (3-11, 2-5 GNAC) heads to Saint Joseph's Maine on April 26th for an 8:00 pm GNAC contest.
The Cadets (6-7, 3-4 GNAC) are at Simmons at 7:00 pm the same night.
