Wildcats Tame Mustangs, Remain Undefeated

NEWTON, Mass. – Amanda Bowen (Randolph, Vt.) led the way for the Mustangs this afternoon, tallying two goals and two assists in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest  setback to the visiting Wildcats of Johnson and Wales by a final score of 14-7.

With the win, JWU improves to 9-0 (4-0 GNAC) while Mount Ida drops to 2-8 (2-5 GNAC).

Sophomore Nicole Pavao (Peabody, Mass.) recorded the first goal of the game off the opening draw control to give the Mustangs the early 1-0 advantage just 13 seconds into the game. Lydia Knapp (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and Marissa Hart (Cohoes, N.Y.) fired back for the Wildcats by scoring the next four goals of the game to give the visitors the early 4-1 lead.

Gabrielle Vasile (Milford, Mass.) recorded her 10th goal of the season at the 20:41 mark of the opening stanza before Samantha Basler (Plymouth, Mass.) tallied her first and only goal of the day to bring the Mustangs back to within three, 5-2.

JWU took control of the game after the latter Basler goal by scoring six out of the next eight goals while taking a convincing 11-4 lead into the break. Hart padded her 3rd and 4th goals of the quarter on an unassisted marker and a free position goal while teammate, Raquel Pederzani (Coventry, R.I.) also recorded two goals of her own, one also off a free position attempt with just nine seconds remaining in the half. Knapp added her 3rd goal before fellow Wildcat Jessica Schmell (Coopersburg, Pa.) tallied an unassisted marker at the 5:51 mark. Rebecca Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.) and Bowen each scored a goal down the stretch for Mount Ida headed into the break.

The Wildcats opened the second half adding to the lead off the stick of Knapp again who scored her 30th goal of the season, giving JWU the 12-4 cushion. Mount Ida would get things going at the 23:04 mark with Nikki Kinneen (Salem, N.H.) and Hayley Napier (Fairhaven, Mass.) scoring back to back goals to bring the Mustangs back within six, 12-6.

Knapp and Schmell padded the JWU lead and put the visitors back on top by 8 with 8:56 remaining in the game before Bowen tallied her 2nd goal of the game with 0:41 left in the game.

With the 14-7 GNAC win, JWU keeper Marina Consiglio (New Fairfield, Conn.) improved to 5-0 while Sydney Fredette (Hudson, Mass.) drops to 2-8.

The Mustangs held the slight edge in ground balls, 20-18, while Johnson and Wales outshot the Mustangs 34-15. JWU was perfect on clears going 9-9 while the Mustangs were 9-12.

Mount Ida will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference matchup with Fitchburg State with game time set for 4:00. JWU will return to the field on Wednesday night when they host Simmons College at 8:00 p.m.
