Bowen Records Third Straight Hat Trick, Mustangs Fall to Engineers

NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team faced off against the Engineers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Monday afternoon on Alumni Field. MIT got off to a hot start en route to a 20-5 non-conference victory over the Mustangs.

With the win, MIT improves to 6-0 overall, while Mount Ida drops to 1-2 (1-1 GNAC) on the young season.

The Engineers were led offensively on the day by a quartet of players each whom scored a natural hat trick in the contest. Teammates Emily Young (La Jolla, Calif.) and Kira Schott (New Canaan, Conn.) each recorded four goals in the game while Young notched two assists. Isabella DiDio (Jenkintown, Pa.) and sophomore Hannah Levy (Yardley, Pa.) each tallied three goals each while combining for four assists.

Freshman Katie Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.) opened up the scoring in the opening seconds of the game on a free position shot that put MIT up 1-0 just twenty-three seconds into the game. Ashley Masucci (Windham, N.H.) put the visitors up 2-0 a little less than three minutes later on another free position goal before Levy tallied her first marker of the contest at the 25:03 mark of the first half.

Schott got things going for herself with two straight goals within a minute and a half of one another while giving MIT the quick and early 5-0 advantage. DiDio picked up where Schott left off notching two straight goals while increasing the Engineer lead to 7-0 at the 21:25 mark in the opening stanza. Schott tallied her third and fourth goals of the afternoon before teammate Erica Green (Ivyland, Pa.) recorded her first marker of the day from Emma Kane (Garden City, N.J.).

Senior Amanda Bowen (Randolph, Vt.) scored her first goal of the day off a feed from freshman Shaylene Hegarty (Townsend, Mass.) with 8:47 remaining in the half before Levy struck again for the 11-1 lead heading into the break.

Bowen raced down the field off the opening draw control in the second half and tallied her second goal of the contest, cutting into the visitors lead at 11-2. Young put MIT ahead by a score of 13-2 on back to back goals before Bowen recorded a hat trick of her own making the score 13-3 in favor of MIT.

DiDio, Young and Levy all tallied a goal apiece down the stretch while Rachel Weinberg (Manassas, Va.) notched her first goal of the game and Kristyn Berretta (San Diego, Calif.) tallied two goals in the final minutes. Hegarty scored her first goal of the game at the 11:08 mark of the second half.

The Engineers outshot Mount Ida 38-13, while also holding the advantage in ground balls 23-13; MIT was 14-15 on clears with Mount Ida going 13-19.

Eva Boal (Princeton Junction, N.J.) got the win in between the pipes for MIT while improving to 6-0 on the year. Sydney Fredette (Hudson, Mass.) took the loss for the hosts dropping to 1-2 on the season.

Mount Ida will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Wednesday afternoon when they host the Falcons of Albertus Magnus with game time set for 3:30. MIT will back in action tomorrow night when they host the United States Coast Guard Academy at 6:00 p.m.
