Wednesday, April 24, 2013 (Newton, Massachusetts)- The Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team fell to the Lasers of Lasell College on Wednesday afternoon on Grellier Field by a final score of 20-8. The Mustangs season comes to an end with an overall record of (5-11, 2-7 GNAC), while Lasell advances to the conference semifinals with a record of (13-3).
The Lasers got on the board often and early in the first 16:20 of the contest scoring the first seven goals, while taking the early and commanding lead, 7-0. Britney Wuorio (Bolton, MA) scored first for the Lasers on an assist from teammate Caitlyn Brecher (Cheshire, CT) giving the Lasers a 1-0 lead just 1:47 into the game. Three minutes later Bridget Munnelly (Bellingham, MA) tallied her first maker of the game giving Lasell a 2-0 lead on a free position shot. Bridget Doherty (Franklin, MA) and Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA) tallied two straight goals in a matter of one minute to increase the Laser lead and give the hosts some cushion. Wuorio and Slattery would continue the scoring for Lasell scoring the next three goals while giving the GNAC regular season champs a 7-0 lead. Amanda Bowen (Randolph, VT/Randolph Union) got the Mustangs on the board at the 14:19 mark hoping to spark some offense for the visitors. Bowen's goal did the opposite as Wuorio, Doherty and Slattery rattled off four straight markers that separated themselves from the visitors at 11-1. Alexandria Milot (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton) scored at the 4:41 mark of the half, cutting into the lead at 11-2. Bridget Ryan (Chatham, NJ) scored twice in the last 1:46 on man up tallies that gave the Lasers a 13-2 lead at the break.
Mount Ida came out of intermission scoring the first two goals of the half on Bowen's second goal of the game off the stick of Kaitlyn Affhauser (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac) and Maile Melvin (Hebron, CT/RHAM), cutting the hosts lead to 13-4. However, the hosts were not done scoring as Munnelly, Brecher, and Wuorio scored four goals combined in 3:30 minutes to add to the lead at 17-4. Affhauser would notch her only goal of the game with just 16:32 remaining in the contest. With 12:56 left, Slattery, Doherty, and Brecher would add to the scoring column while increasing the lead to 20-5.
The Mustangs would score the final three goals in the game on tallies by Bowen, who recorded a hat trick, Milot, and Melvin. The remaining 1:25 of the GNAC quarterfinal would be run off the clock and Lasell would come away with the 20-8 victory.
Kayla Musty (Topsham, VT/Oxbow) saw the entirety of the contest in net for the Mustangs while stopping six shots. Sammy Long (Staten Island, NY) saw the majority of the game in goal for the Lasell making four saves on ten shots, and Michaela Doughty (Scituate, MA) saw the final 6:04 of the game for the Lasers making one stop.
Lasell advances to the GNAC Semi Finals on Friday afternoon when they will host the winner of Emmanuel College and Saint Joseph's College (ME), game time has yet to be determined.
