Monday, April 15, 2013 (Fitchburg, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team defeated the Falcons of Fitchburg State University on Monday afternoon by a final score of 8-6. The Mustangs improve to an overall record of (5-9, 2-6 GNAC) while the Falcons drop to (3-8, 1-2 MASCAC).
Senior attack Jessica Bartlett (Marlborough, MA) started the game off on the right foot scoring the first three goals of the game for the Falcons at the 22:22, 17:21, and 16:09 marks of the first half while Chelsea Roberts (Newburyport, MA) assisted on Bartlett's first two goals, giving the hosts an early 3-0 advantage. Mustang Molly Sheppard (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport) would cut into Fitchburg's lead at the 11:13 mark scoring her first goal of the game, making it 3-1 in favor of the Falcons. Junior attack Markie Apple (Pittsfield, MA) would put respond nine minutes later on her only score of the contest on an unassisted marker giving the hosts some cushion at 4-1. Just before the half time whistle, Alexandria Milot (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton) scored on an assist from Samantha Basler (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North) to cut Fitchburg's lead in half only before Maile Melvin (Hebron, CT/RHAM) scored with just 0:02 left on the clock, to edge the Mustangs closer at the break, 4-3.
Sophomore midfielder Amanda Bowen (Randolph, VT/Randolph Union) would score at the 18:12 mark of the second half, knotting the score at 4-4. Just over a minute and a half later, Bowen notched her second and third goals of the game giving the Mustangs their first lead of the game at 5-4. After a few minutes of scoreless play, Milot tallied her second marker of the game while increasing the Mustang lead to 6-4. Bowen would add one more goal to her resume as the clock read 9:29 and scoreboard 7-4 in favor of the visitors. Mount Ida would add one more goal in the contest on Sheppard's second score of the game. Fitchburg State would add two more goals in the final 2:05 of the game, but it would prove not enough as Mount Ida would come away with the 8-6 non-conference victory.
The Mustangs were led offensively by Bowen who tallied a hat trick on the afternoon, Milot and Sheppard who each recorded two goals and Melvin who added one tally of her own. Kaitlyn Affhauser (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac) had one assist as Basler recorded two.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday, April 20, 2013 when they host Emerson College on Senior Day with game time scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Seniors Kayla Musty, Alison Koning (Carlisle, MA/Concord Carlisle), and Alexandria Milot will all be honored prior to game time. Fitchburg State will travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday evening with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
