Wednesday, March 13, 2013 (Salem, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team dropped their second straight loss falling 16-10 against non-conference Salem State University Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Massachusetts. The Mustangs, who had captured their first win of the season over UMASS-Dartmouth last Monday, slump to an overall record of 1-3 and will venture into their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match-up against hosting Rivier University Saturday starting at 3:00 p.m.
Bridget Dullea (Peabody, MA), Lauren DeLuca (Salem, MA), and Liz Kosak (Milton, MA) combined for 11 goals and three assists to lead the hosts. Dullea (5 goals, 1 assist) put the Vikings on the board early when she scored on a free shot in the game's opening minutes. Molly Sheppard (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport) kept the Mustangs in the contest as she scored twice in the opening five minutes that temporarily gave Mount Ida a 3-2 lead. Following a score by the Mustangs' Maile Melvin (Hebron, CT/RHAM), Salem State went on a 7-1 run over the final twelve minutes of the first half to jump out to a commanding 11-5 lead at halftime. Dulllea and Kelsey Russell (Arlington, MA) combined for four points during the skein.
Melvin notched two more scores that pulled Mount Ida to within 12-7 with 11:20 remaining in the second period, but DeLuca and Dullea added back-to-back scores that pushed the lead to 14-7, and ended any threat to a Mustangs' comeback. DeLuca (3 goals, 2 assists) and Russell (2 goals, 3 assists) ended the game with five points apiece while Kosak contributed three goals for the Vikings, who outshot Mount Ida 39-29.
Melvin finished with four goals for Mount Ida, while Sheppard (2 goals, 2 assists), Brian Barker (Westerly, RI/Westerly) and Amanda Bowen (Randolph, VT/Randolph Union) all had two goal games.
Alex Varoutsos (Woburn, MA) notched the win in net in her first career start by making 12 saves. Kayla Musty (Topsham, VT/Oxbow) took the loss for the Mustangs after stopping nine shots.
