Saturday, April 21, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - In the final regular season contest of 2012 on senior day, the Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team was downed by visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) neighboring foe Lasell College Saturday afternoon by a score of 22-7. The Mount Ida Athletic department and fourth year Head Coach Peri Steere honored lone senior Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) prior to the contest for her contributions to the program.
The Mustangs fell behind 8-2 through the first 20 minutes of the first half and was unable to recover struggling to contain the Lasers high powered offense. Mount Ida was only able to muster two scores in the final stanza while the visitors piled on the scoring ultimately taking home the conference win.
Mount Ida, who will be the seventh seed in the league post-season tournament, completes the 2012 regular season with an overall record of 4-10, 4-5 in GNAC action while the visitors finish the year with an impressive 13-2 slate going 8-1 in GNAC play and will be the two seed. The Mustangs will not host a tournament game and will wait to see where they will travel.
Sophomore attacker and captain Molly Sheppard (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport) led the hosts with three scores while freshman Amanda Bowen (Randolph, VT/Randolph Union) recorded two goals. Freshmen Kaitlyn Affhauser (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac) and Makayla Menard (Harrisville, RI/Burriville) chipped in tallies while Affhauser and junior defender Alexandria Milot (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton) dished out an assist each.
For the visitors, sophomore attacker Britney Wuorio (Bolton, MA/Nashoba Regional) was outstanding notching a game-high seven goals and three assists. Junior Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) and sophomore Erin Gertonson (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Blue Point) notched four goals a piece with Slattery also adding two dishes. Sophomore Bridget Ryan (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) tallied two goals and an assist respectively.
Mount Ida was led by Sheppard with eight ground balls and six draw controls also converting the Mustangs only successful free position shot. Riviera, Milot and freshman defender Stephanie Kehoe Saugus, MA/St. Mary's) all notched three pick-ups each.
Host netminder, junior Kayla Musty (Topsham, VT/Oxbow) played all 60 minutes between the pipes denying eight Laser shots while Lasell freshman goaltender Alexa Katsigianis (Amherst, NH/Souhegan) made six saves.
