SHEPPARD NETS THREE SCORES, MUSTANGS FALL 10-5

Tuesday, April 3, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team trailed by two (6-4) at the break but could only muster one score in the second stanza ultimately falling to visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member Simmons College Tuesday afternoon by a score of 10-5.

The Mustangs only led once scoring the opening goal of the contest but eventually gave up the next two scores trailing 2-1.  The game would knot twice more holding at 3-3 after Mount Ida sophomore captain Molly Sheppard (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport) scored her first of three for the contest.  The Sharks eventually went ahead by a couple on two different occasions heading into the break up 6-4.  Simmons went into the second half scoring the opening three goals paired with solid defense to close out the 10-5 GNAC win handing the hosts their third league loss.

Mount Ida drops their third straight game falling to an overall record of 2-8 with a GNAC slate of 2-3 while the visitors improve to an even 5-5 with a 5-1 league standing. 

Along with three scores from Sheppard, the Mustangs saw two goals from freshman attacker Amanda Bowen (Randolph, VT/Randolph Union) with junior Alexandria Milot (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton) chipping in an assist.

Simmons saw a game-high four goals and one dish from freshman Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, MA) with sophomore Leanne Luke (Newton, MA) converting two scores.  Senior's Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, NH) and Meaghan Maurice (Portland, ME) and sophomore Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, MA) added a goal and an assist each.  Freshman Mary Essa (Las Vegas, NV) chipped in a goal while sophomore Callie Warnock (Kingston, MA) dished out one helper.

Senior defender Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) was solid for the hosts picking up a game-high eight ground balls causing six turnovers as well.  Sheppard and junior netminder Kayla Musty (Topsham, VT/Oxbow) tallied seven ground balls each while Bowen converted three draw controls.

Musty saw all 60 minutes between the pipes for the Mustangs denying nine Simmons shots while Shark goaltender, junior Kelly Last (West Haven, CT) was impressive making 12 saves on the afternoon.

Mount Ida has a longer break resuming action Tuesday, April 10th against visiting GNAC member Emmanuel College with the contest starting at 4:00 p.m.  The visitors will host league foe Norwich University Saturday afternoon of Easter weekend with game time at 1:00 p.m.
