SHEPPARD TALLIES SIX GOALS, MUSTANGS FALL 14-11 TO CADETS

Saturday, March 24, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Mount Ida College sophomore captain and attacker Molly Sheppard (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport) recorded a game-high six goals and two assists but the Mustangs were unable to contain visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member Norwich University Saturday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts handing the hosts a 14-11 loss.

Fourth year Head Coach Peri Steere and the Mustangs never had the lead after falling behind 4-1 to start the contest.  The Mustangs would cut it to a one goal deficit down 3-4 only to watch their valiant comeback slip away surrendering four scores to Norwich at the end of the first stanza.  The Mustangs snuck back into the game down 9-7 early in the second frame, but the surging Cadet offense was unable to be contained handing Mount Ida the 14-11 GNAC loss.

The Mustangs fall for the second straight game to an overall record of 1-5 with a league slate of 1-2 while Norwich remains undefeated for the year and in GNAC action standing at 3-0.

Along with a solid performance from Sheppard, Mount Ida saw three goals from freshman attacker Amanda Bowen (Randolph, VT/Randolph Union).  Mount Ida junior midfielder Alison Koning (Carlisle, MA/Concord Carlisle) and freshman attacker Kaitlyn Affhauser (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac) added one goal each.  Affhauser, senior Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) and sophomore Kayla Bravo (East Providence, RI/East Providence) dished out an assist a piece.

Mount Ida netminder junior Kayla Musty (Topsham, VT/Oxbow) was spectacular between the pipes denying 15 Norwich attempts keeping the Mustangs within striking distance multiple times during the contest.

The visitors saw four goals each from senior's Kacey Abbriano (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) and Danielle Del Dotto (Andover, MA/Austin Prep) with Abbriano also adding two helpers.  Senior attacker Suzanne Whitaker (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) and sophomore midfielder Grace Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, ME/Cheverus) chipped in two score each with senior Lindsey Mathias (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) and freshman Gina Conroy (Amherst, NH/Souhegan) added one goal a piece.

Norwich goaltender senior Meghan Kennedy (Lowell, MA/Lowell) recorded three saves for her squad collecting her third victory.

Mount Ida women's lacrosse will travel to GNAC member St. Joseph College (CT) Tuesday evening with game time slated for 4:00 p.m.
