Tuesday, March 6, 2012 (Milton, Massachusetts) - In the season opener, the Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team dropped a very close 16-11 non-league loss to hosting Curry College Tuesday evening in Milton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs were led by two impressive individual performances seeing a team-high five goals and an assist from sophomore attacker Molly Sheppard (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport). Mount Ida goaltender and newcomer junior Kayla Musty (Topsham, VT/Oxbow) made a game-high 15 saves.
The Mustangs played tough trailing to a very strong Colonels team 9-6 at the midway point. Mount Ida hung tough but was unable to catch up to a surging Curry offense that outshot the visitors 39-20 on the day leading to their ultimate demise falling 16-11.
Mount Ida drops their first bid of the season with an overall record of 0-1 with another non-conference match-up approaching this Thursday evening at UMASS-Dartmouth with game time slated for 4:00 p.m.
Along with solid performances from Sheppard and Musty, the Mustangs saw a three goal performance from junior Alexandria Milot (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton) also adding one dish. Freshman midfielder Amanda Bowen (Randolph, VT/Randolph Union) chipped in three goals as well while junior newcomer Alison Koning (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle) and freshman Kaitlyn Affhauser (Cheshire, MA/Housac) tallied an assist each.
Curry played all three goalies for the win. Senior Maria Lynch (Billerica, MA) finished with six saves with seven goals against in 46:39 minutes of play. Junior Emily LeBlanc (Abington, MA) entered the net for 8:21 minutes, making two saves and letting in one goal. Freshman Christina Wallis (Peabody, MA) played just five minutes to end the game, letting in three goals.
