EBONY MILLS TALLIES FIVE GOALS, MUSTANGS WIN 14-8

Monday, April 4, 2011 (Newton, Massachusetts) – Mount Ida College women's lacrosse standout Ebony Mills (Harrison, ME/Oxford Hills) tallied a game high five goals en route to a 14-8 non-league victory over visiting Becker College on Monday evening on a wet and saturated field in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs, who capture their third win in a row, improve their overall record to 6-4 and remain at 2-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings while the Hawks fall to 5-3 for the year.

The Mustangs scored six out of the first seven goals tallied in the contest from a montage of different faces opening up a 6-1 lead through 23 minutes in the first stanza.

Senior's Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton) and Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union) notched two scores a piece during the six goal run while Mills and senior Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) added one each.  Hawk freshman Ashley Mossey (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendohowa) chalked up the tally for the visitors at the 17 minute mark on a dish from sophomore Amanda Corso (West Haven, CT/West Haven).

The Hawks made it 6-2 following an unassisted goal by freshman Shannon Smith (Barre, VT/Spaulding).  Mount Ida countered with two more scores on two unassisted bids, one from Thompson and the other from Mills, for the 8-2 lead with a minute and half to go before the midway point.

Mossey scored the final goal of the half on a successful free position attempt making it 8-3 heading into halftime.

Becker picked up where they left off scoring the first goal of the second frame on an unassisted score from sophomore Vanessa Laureano (Dracut, MA/Dracut) making it 8-4 early in the stanza.

The Mustangs would reel off the next two goals on scores from Mills and Chuba, both coming via the free position attempt leading 10-4 with 24 minutes to go in regulation.

Smith added her second and final tally of the game immediately following making it 10-5 Mustangs.  But two more scores by Mount Ida, one from Mills on a dish from senior Ali Sarno (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport) and the other on an unassisted bid from junior Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central), made the score 12-5 with 16 minutes remaining in the contest.

The teams would exchange the next five goals with Becker going first on an unassisted score from Corso that followed with Mills's final tally of the game making the score 13-6 Mount Ida with less than nine minutes to go.

Becker was next pulling within six goals (13-7) on a score from freshman Michelle Griczika (Barre, MA/Gardner).  The tally followed with Mount Ida's final goal of the contest coming from the stick of Thompson leading 14-8 with six and half minutes remaining.

The visitors scored the final goal of the game on a successful free position attempt from Mossey, but it wasn't enough handing Mount Ida the 14-8 non-conference victory.

Mount Ida netminder junior Katherine Chousa (Norwood, MA/Norwood) denied seven visiting shots while Hawk senior goaltender Alena Phongsa (Putnam, CT/Putnam) added 11 stops.

The Mustangs will host GNAC foe Emerson College Wednesday afternoon with game time slated for 4:00 p.m.  Mount Ida was knocked out of the conference post-season tournament by the Lions last season.
