The Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team captured their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory of the 2011 season winning 16-6 over hosting first year program Emmanuel College Saturday afternoon in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. The Mustangs improve to an overall record of 3-3 and are now a perfect 1-0 in league play.
Emmanuel saw two goals from senior Kristina Marik (Airmont, N.Y.) and junior's Logan Carr (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Madeline Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) but was unable to capitalize on the win.
The visitors opened the scoring early on in the contest with three straight goals in the first five minutes. Seniors Kira Feeter (Keene, NH/Keene), Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton) and Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union) tallied scores for the Mustangs to give Mount Ida a 3-0 lead early on.
The Saints responded with a goal by Leahy at 21:06 of the first, with Carr notching another less than two minutes later. The teams proceeded to trade goals back and forth for the remainder of the half, with Feeter adding her second for the Mustangs with 1:36 left in the frame. Mount Ida would manage to stay just above Emmanuel, however, and took a 6-5 lead into halftime.
After the break, it was all in favor of the visitors, as the Mustangs put nine straight balls into the back of the Saints' net in the opening 20 minutes of the half. Thompson added four more goals for Mount Ida with senior Alexandra Sarno (East Patchogue, NY) scoring two as well.
The Saints managed to get another score back late in the game off the stick of Marik, but it was too much for the hosts to handle and the Mustangs earned a 16-6 win.
For the Saints, freshman goalkeeper Hillary Dandurant (Merrimac, Mass.) tallied 12 saves in net while her counterpart at Mount Ida, freshman Katherine Chousa (Norwood, MA/Norwood) made six saves.
