NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College made 12 three-pointers, including eight in the second quarter to pull within three points at halftime, but Albertus Magnus opened up their lead in the final twenty minutes and handed the Mustangs an 87-71 loss in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball on Thursday night at Mount Ida Athletic Center.
Imani Bumpus (W. Hartford, Conn.) led all Mount Ida players with 15 points, while Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.) had eight points and a game-high eight assists, as the Mustangs racked up 19 assists to just 9 for Albertus.
The visiting Falcons got impressive offensive performances and matching double-doubles from junior Olivia Bolden (South Windsor, Conn.) and senior Liz Falcigno (Wallingford, Conn.). Bolden poured in 29 points and 15 rebounds, as well as six of the Falcon's 13 steals, while Falcigno had 27 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two thefts and each player had a block.
Albertus led by 9 points, 24-13 after one quarter of play, but Mount Ida hit three- straight three-pointers, two by Jess Cyr (Ashford, Conn.), to spark a 14-0 run that included another triple by Cyr, who ended the game with a career-high eleven points, five rebounds and two assists.
Jill Johnson (North Haven, Conn.) gave the Falcons a three-point lead at half with the final four points of the second quarter en route to a 15 points performance that also saw her grab six rebounds and have two steals and a dime.
The Mustangs stayed within a point until midway through the third quarter when Bolden sparked a 10-4 run and the visitors extended their lead to ten points by the end of the third frame.
With Albertus Magnus scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter, Mount Ida was never able to creep back into a single-digit deficit.
Falcigno had seven of her points in the fourth quarter to help the visitors salt the game away.
Bumpus and Trish Liotta (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) joined Cyr with three three-pointers made apiece, with Liotta tallying ten points, while Brittany Crosby (Riverside, R.I.) had a team-best 11 rebounds and seven points, and Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) added eight points, three assists and a steal.
Still looking to break into the conference win column, Mount Ida (3-12, 0-7 GNAC) plays host to Suffolk University on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm, part of Mount Ida's Athletics Open House this weekend.
Albertus moves to 10-7 on the year and 5-3 in the GNAC, and they will play at Anna Maria this Saturday in a 3:00 PM tip-off.
