NEWTON, Mass. -- Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) received commemorative basketballs for reaching the 1,000 point and 1,000 rebound marks on December 8th at Mount Ida College Athletic Center before the Mustangs faced Wheelock College in non-conference women's basketball action.
Martinez was recognized for being the first women ever in Mount Ida history to achieve both milestones. The senior center went on to add to her totals with 8 points and 16 rebounds in the loss.
The Mustangs were neck and neck with the Wildcats in the first quarter of play. Both teams receiving scoring from a multitude of players. Brittany Crosby (Riverside, R.I.) matched Martinez and led the Mustangs in scoring with 8 points. Martinez continued her strong defensive presence as well by posting another double-digit rebounding game along with three blocks.
Brianna Hochwarter (Attleboro, Mass.) led Wheelock College in scoring by posting a game high 22 points. Michelle Woods (Wilmington, Mass.) also contributed another 17 points as well. Sarah Tobin (Salisbury, Mass.) anchored the Wildcats defense with ten rebounds.
The Wildcats broke out towards the end of the second quarter by going on a 12-0 run to distance themselves by a margin of 15 points going into the half. Wheelock continued that momentum into the fourth quarter where they put themselves up by 19 points.
Tough defense by the Wildcats forced 31 turnovers from Mount Ida.
Both teams shot almost the exact same from the field. Mount Ida shot 37% where Wheelock shot 36.9%. However, the Wildcats shot over 20% higher from behind the three-point line.
Mount Ida was solid on the boards by grabbing 43 rebounds and the bench contributed more points than the Wildcats as well.
Mount Ida College begins Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play as they host Norwich University this Saturday December 10th. Wheelock College returns to play on December 13th where they host Fisher College.
