WINTHROP, Mass. -- Mount Ida College junior Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) has become the first Mustang women's basketball player honored by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) this season, earning the honor of Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday by the conference office.
Martinez is coming off of a week that saw her post double-doubles in each of Mount Ida's two games, her 12th and 13th double-doubles of the season. The center willed the Mustangs to a home win over Lasell with an impressive 20 point, 16 rebound performance, in which she started out the game shooting 6-6 from the field.
Now with double-doubles in seven consecutive games, Martinez grabbed 16 more rebounds on Saturday at Saint Joseph's College of Maine, giving her 871 career boards, tying the Mustang career mark. She also equalled the career record of 368 offensive reboounds, while scoring ten points and adding two blocks.
She leads the conference in both total rebounds and offensive rebounds, and is ranked sixth in the country with five offensive rebounds per game.
Martinez and the Mustangs will be on their home court tomorrow night when they host Mt. Saint Mary's (NY) at 7:00 pm in the back end of a doubleheader at Mount Ida Athletic Center.
