NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Mount Ida College women's basketball team dropped their fifth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game of the season to the Cadets of Norwich University on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 92-71.
Junior center Angie Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) recorded a team high 19 points and 11 rebounds while Trish Liotta (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) tallied 14 points. Fellow Mustang Kaitlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded 12 points while dishing out two assists. Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.) scored nine points, dished out five assists and caromed four rebounds.
The Cadets improve to 4-3 in league play and 11- 8 on the year, while Mount Ida falls to 2-5 in the GNAC and 4-15 overall.
Junior forward Heather LeBlanc (Sanford, Maine) recorded her tenth double double on the year for the Cadets with a team high 20 points and 17 rebounds.
Norwich wasted no time in the first quarter, scoring 20 points to the Mustangs' 10 before extending the margin to 14 at the break, 40-26. The Cadets shot 38.9% from the field and made 2-of-7 from beyond the arc at the half. Mount Ida would make just 29.4% from the floor and made just 8-of-14 from the free throw line.
The second half remained in favor of the Cadets as the Maroon and Gold widened the lead to 21 points at the stanza before closing out the contest hitting 47.1 percent from the field and making 20-of-28 from the stripe for the 92-71 victory.
Sophomore Arianna Harrison (Vernon, Vt.) and junior Kayla Mercer (New Britain, Conn.) scored 19 points each, while freshman Vanessa Fleury (Lebanon, N.H.) adding 17 points for the Cadets. Sophomore guard Shyann Josler (Thetford, Vt.) contributed nine points and nine assists in the win.
Norwich outrebounded the Mustangs, 47-31, and scored 18 points on second chances with six Cadets' picking up at least one assist in the win.
Mount Ida returns to the confines of the Mount Ida Athletic Center on Tuesday, February 2nd when they play host to cross town rival Lasell College with tip off set for 6:00 PM.
The Cadets will return to action on Tuesday as well when they hit the road for a 5:30 PM tip off at Plymouth State University.
