Mustangs Can't Handle #6 Hope in Sunshine State

MAITLAND, Fla. -- Mount Ida College women's basketball ended their Winter Break trip to Florida with a stiff test against nationally ranked Hope College, and were dealt a 102-56 defeat by the Flying Dutch at the RDV Sportsplex Classic.

The Mustangs stayed competitive with Hope in the first quarter, trailing 25-17, but the Flying Dutch overwhelmed them in the second quarter, using a 22-7 frame to seize control of the game.

Junior Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) led Mount Ida, who shot 36.5% from the floor and 3-6 from downtown, with 18 points, while Brittany Crosby (Warwick, R.I.) had eight rebounds, eight points and three blocks.

Sophomore guard Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.) was 3-4 from behind the three-point line and scored 14 points, a new career high. Muir also pulled down six rebounds for Mount Ida, who were outrebounded 62-36 and committed 24 turnovers to just 12 miscues by Hope.

The Flying Dutch got double-digit scoring from four players, including a game-high 19 points off the bench from Francesca Buchanan (Grant, Michigan), 17 points from Mandy Traversa (Winfield, Ill.), and a double-double (16 points, 15 rebounds, along with three assists, three steals and three blocks) from forward Maura McAfee (Midland, Michigan).

Off the bench for the Mustangs, Janique Cofield (San Diego, Calif.) dished out a team-high four assists.

Hope stays perfect at 10-0 on the year and will wrap up their RDV Sportslex Classic trip on Wednesday with a 5:30 pm game against Beloit.

The Mustangs (1-10) will return to Massachusetts for the New Year and then be on the road at Becker for a 1:00 pm game on January 2nd.
