Buccaneers Sail Past Mustangs in Opener in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Back on the hardwood just three days after the Christmas holiday, the Mount Ida College women's basketball team tipped off against Beloit College on Monday night in non-conference action at the RDV Sportsplex Tournament in Orlando, Florida while losting their fifth straight game by a final score of 87-46. 

With the loss, Mount Ida drops to 1-9 on the season while the Mustangs have yet to begin Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. For the Buccaneers, it is their fifth win of the season as they get back to .500 at 5-5.

Angie Martinez (Taunton,Mass.) led the way for the Mustangs offensively in twenty-two minutes of play in which she totaled 13 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Kaitlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) who has totaled double digit points in all but two games this season; tallied 10 points and two rebounds while teammate Brittany Crosby record six points and five rebounds.

Laura Panicali (Carol Stream, Ill.) led the Buccaneers offensively as she scored a game high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds and two steals. Lana Wieseman (Lake Geneva, Wisc.) totaled a game high 10 rebounds while scoring 17 points on 7 of 20 shooting from the field.

Both the Mustangs and the Bucs were neck in neck throughout the entire first ten minutes of play with Beloit leading by just three at the end of the quarter, 19-16.

The Buccaneers opened the second quarter on a 19-2 run in which they were able to open up their lead at 38-19 by pouncing on the Mustangs and outscoring them 30-4 while leading at the break, 49-20.

In the opening quarter of the second half, Beloit continued to add onto the lead in which Shelby Kline (Rockton, Ill.), Wieseman and Panicali took over the game for the Bucs and never looked back

Kline shined throughout for Beloit recording 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and five steals in the non-conference victory held on the confines of the Orlando Magic practice facility.

The Mustangs were able to outscore Beloit in the final ten minutes of play, 17-16, but it turned out to not be enough as the Buccaneers cruised past Mount Ida to open the 2016 year.

Mount Ida and Beloit will both be back in the next two days when the Mustangs take on nationally ranked # 6 Hope College at 5:30 PM on Tuesday afternoon, while the Bucs will take on Hope on Wednesday afternoon with tip-off set for 4:30 PM.
