Women's Basketball Downed Despite Big Night from Martinez

BOSTON, Mass. -- Mount Ida got a game-high 26 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks from junior Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.), but it wasn't enough to ward off host UMass Boston, who handed the Mustangs a 77-57 defeat in non-conference women's basketball on Tuesday evening at Clark Athletic Gym.

The Mustangs drop to 1-6 on the year, while the Beacons have opened their season a perfect 5-0 after breaking open a two point halftime lead and outscoring Mount Ida 47-29 in the final two quarters.

Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) added 11 points and freshman point guard Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.) scored six points and dished out three assists in the loss. Muir also made a pair of three-pointers and, along with Jessee and Brittany Crosby (Riverside, R.I.), who also scored six points, had a pair of steals.

The Beacons were led by forward Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.), who scored 24 points on 9-18 shooting and grabbed 17 rebounds herself, and Grace Geary (Falmouth, Mass.), who added 21 points off the bench, helping the UMass Boston reserves outscore those of Mount Ida 36-4.

Mount Ida returns to the court next Tuesday night when they host Emerson at 5:00 pm, the opening half of a basketball double header at home.

UMass Boston looks to stay unbeaten this Thursday night with a 7:00 pm tip-off at Bridgewater State.
