NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College women's basketball team suffered their fifth loss of the season against the Rams of Framingham State University on Tuesday evening by a final score of 93-70.
Raegan Mulherin (Baldwinville, Mass.) recorded a team and game high 29 points for the visitors while also dishing out four assists. Angie Martinez (Taunton, Mass.), the leading rebounder in the GNAC, led the way for the Mustangs in usual fashion with a game high 14 rebounds to go along with 19 points.
With the setback, Mount Ida drops to 1-5 (0-0 GNAC) while Framingham State improves to 3-2 (0-0 MASCAC) on the young season.
Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass) opened the scoring for both sides early on in the first quarter when she hit her first of two shots from three point land to give the Mustangs the early 3-0 advantage. Muhlerin and Mustang Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) exchanged baskets before the Rams' Sarah Palace (Auburn, Mass.) made two straight free throws to bring the visitors even at 5-5.
After a foul by Muir and a turnover by Jesse, Mulherin was back at it again after scoring five straight points off a layup and a three pointer to give the visiting Rams a five point cushion, in which they never looked back.
Muhlerin led the way offensively in the first half for the visiting Rams in which she recorded 17 points, five steals and four rebounds while teammate Alycia Rackliffe (Feeding Hills, Mass.) notched eight points and 13 rebounds.
Martinez shot 3 of 8 from the floor in the opening half while hitting 1 of 2 from the charity stripe. Brittany Crosby (Riverside, R.I.), who has been off to a hot start this season, notched five points on 2 of 5 shooting while grabbing eight boards.
At the midway point of the non-conference tilt, the Rams held a slim margin of six points that saw the visitors lead at the break, 26-20.
The second half, much like the first saw the Rams, Muhlerin, and Rackliffe continue to dominate in the paint and from the perimeter. Muhlerin managed 12 second half points while shooting 50 % from the field and from downtown while Rackliffe tallied 10 more rebounds to go along with her three steals.
Crosby went even in the second half of play padding seven points and seven rebounds while Martinez tacked on 12 points and nine rebounds. All but one Mount Ida player scored in the contest for the hosts which were led by Jessica D'Esposito (Malden, Mass.) who scored five points off the bench to go along with one assist.
Tiphani Harris (Revere, Mass.) and Nicole Regan (Milton, Mass.) led the way off the bench for the Rams as Harris recorded nine points and 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes of play while Regan added on six points, and one assist and steal.
Both teams will head into the Thanksgiving break with a few days rest ahead of them before getting back on the hardwood floor on December 1st. The Mustangs will hit the road to continue their non-conference schedule when they visit UMass-Boston with tipoff set for 5:30 PM. The Rams will play host to GNAC member Rivier University with that game set to tip at 7:00 PM.
