Mustangs Clipped by Lions, 57-46, in Non-Conference Hoops

BOSTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College dropped a 57-46 decision at host Emerson College in non-conference women's basketball on Monday evening at Brown-Plofker Gym.

Mount Ida had three players in triple figures and got 12 rebounds from Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.), but shot just 22.4% from the field and made only 2-16 from behind the three point line.

Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) and Stephanie Champoux (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored 11 points apiece, and first year Trish Liotta (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) added ten points.

Kelsey Johnson scored 14 points on the night for Emerson, who improves to 6-1 on the year, while Mount Ida drops to 3-6.


The first half saw the Lions shoot nearly 40%, with Kristin Brice leading the way with six points, matched by Jesse for the Mustangs. The Lions defense held the Mustangs to 19% shooting in the first half, and the hosts went into the break with a 30-20 lead.

The second half saw Johnson and Maria Santora lead the Lions with seven points each as Emerson shot 33% in the half. Santora also collected four boards in the half and the Lions defense got eight blocks in the final twenty minutes, including four by Brice, who had 12 points in the victory. The Lions also forced 10 turnovers in the half en route to the 11 point win.

Martinez added seven points in the game and she and Champoux each dished out three assists for Mount Ida. Mustang freshman Imani Bumpus (W. Hartford, Conn.) scored five points and had nine rebounds, a block, and two steals.

Mount Ida enjoys some time off but will play again this year when they travel to New York City for a pair of games, starting on December 29th at Mt. St. Vincent in the Bronx at 3:00 pm.

The Lions will also take a break before returning to action on December 18 where they'll face Randolph-Macon in the Virgin Islands Tournament at 10 a.m. local time in St. Thomas.
