Boston, Mass. – The Mount Ida College women's basketball took an 11 point halftime lead which never dipped below double-digits after the break in a 73-48 win over non-conference and NAIA opponent Fisher College on Saturday afternoon at Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium in Lynn, MA.
The Mustangs improve to 3-5 with the win, while Fisher drops to 1-6 on the season.
Sophomore guard Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) scored a game-high 23 points, while classmate Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) recorded 12 of her 15 points in the second half and added a game-high 18 rebounds for the double-double effort.
The game began in the Mustang's favor as Stephanie Champoux (Tewksbury, Mass.) hit a jump shot to put the Mustangs up 2-0. In the next minute, Imani Bumpus (W. Hartford, Conn.) hit a layup to up the score to 4-0. Murphy Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) hit a layup to put the Falcons on the board 4-2.
The Mustangs went on a seven-point run to put the team up 17-7. Mount Ida went on another run, this time of 10 points, to increase their lead over the Falcons to 25-11. Camila Da Silva (Everett, Mass.) hit a jump shot to cut the Mustang lead to 12, and the Green and White held a 39-28 edge at the break.
Jesse had 17 of her points and five rebounds in the first half. Other key players for the Mustangs were freshman Trish Liotta (Hampton Bays, N.Y.), who had seven points in the first half, and Shanell Nardone (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Champoux with five points and two rebounds each in the opening period.
Shakieya Roland-Drake (Boston, MA), Murphy Carroll, and Da Silva were first-half leaders for the Falcons. Roland-Drake had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Murphy Carroll had eight points and four rebounds and Da Silva had four points with one rebound.
The second half remained in the Mustangs' favor as they outscored the Falcons 34-20. Martinez scored 12 points in the second half for the Mustangs, and Champoux had seven points.
Champoux had 12 points in the victory, as did Liotta, who was 3-7 from behind the three point line. Jesse and Bumpus each had eight rebounds, helping Mount Ida to a 64-44 advantage on the boards.
Roland-Drake recorded a double-double for the Falcons with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Murphy Carroll followed Roland-Drake with 14 points on the afternoon. Christine Briggs (Rumford, Maine) racked up 10 boards in the contest while scoring four points. Madison Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) helped out with seven points.
The Falcons return to action Sunday as they host the University of Maine-Presque Isle at 2:00 pm at Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium in Lynn, MA.
