Women’s Hoops Set for Home Debut after Falling to Owls

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Mount Ida College suffered an 89-42 defeat to hosts Westfield State University in non-conference women's basketball on Tuesday evening in the Woodward Center. 

The Mustangs (0-3) will now turn their attentions to their home opener, which will take place on Thursday evening at 6:00 pm in Mount Ida Athletic Center, when the Mustangs host Lesley University. 

Freshman guard Trish Liotta (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with 10 points off the bench while forward Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) added nine points and eight rebounds. 

Liotta was 2-2 from behind the three-point line, as Mount Ida went 6-11 from downtown (54.5%). Imani Bumpus (West Hartford, Conn.) and Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) each hit a pair of triples and added eight points apiece. 

Forbasaw Nkamebo (Amherst, Mass.) was 9-10 from the floor, scored a game high 21 points and added 7 rebounds in the win. 

Senior guard Jen Ashton (Beverly, Mass.) scored 20 points and tallied a game high six assists for the Owls (1-0). 

A 20-3 run at the five minute mark extended a one point Owl lead and paved the way for a 53-28 advantage in the first half. 

An aggressive Owls' defense caused 33 Mount Ida turnovers on the night that resulted in 46 points. 

Jill Valley (Orange, Mass.) and Kirsy Segarra (Holyoke, Mass.) registered 11 and eight points respectively off the Owl bench. 

Westfield held a 41-25 edge in rebounds and 21-2 advantage in points from the charity stripe. 

Westfield State travels to Waterville, Maine for the Colby College Classic this weekend when they take on Wellesley College on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:00 p.m. and MIT on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
