WALTHAM, Mass. – The Mount Ida women's basketball team trailed by just five points on Sunday afternoon, but saw Regis College pull away in the second half for a 67-47 win in the consolation game of the Brandeis University women's basketball tip-off tournament at Red Auerbach Arena.
For the second straight game, sophomore guard Stephanie Champoux (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the Mustangs in scoring, as she put in ten points while also dishing out a pair of assists and grabbing three rebounds.
Champoux was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging nine points over the first two games this year.
Sophomore Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) grabbed 12 rebounds and added seven points, and freshman Imani Bumpus (West Hartford, Conn.) added 9 points and six rebounds.
Guard Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) had seven points and three dimes for the Mustangs, who shot 31% from the field.
The Mustangs were victimized by forward Amanda Hawkesworth, who had 25 points on 9-18 shooting to lead the Pride (1-1). Hawkesworth had a double-double with 12 rebounds, as did Brittany Stone, who had 14 points and 11 boards.
Guard Emilee Marro was also in double digits for Regis, with 11 points, and she and Hawkesworth each had three assists.
Regis was 18-21 (85.7%) from the free throw line and had 21 points off of 22 Mount Ida turnovers.
The Mustangs (0-2) will prepare for their home opener, which is this Thursday at 6:00 pm when Lesley University will visit Mount Ida Athletic Center.
Regis travels to Suffolk on Wednesday evening for a 7:00 pm game before they begin New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play.
