LOWELL, Mass. – Mount Ida College faced their most difficult test of the year on Monday night, as the Mustangs travelled to Division 1 UMass Lowell for a non-conference women's basketball game at Costello Athletic Center.
After a difficult first half in which the River Hawks jumped out to a 10-0 run, Mount Ida hung tough in the second half, where UMass Lowell outscored their opponents by just five, 27-22, en route to a 73-39 victory.
Senior Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the way for Mount Ida with 13 points, to go with five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.
Jenn Rafuse (Brockton, Mass.) and Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) poured in eight points apiece for Mount Ida (3-10), who shot 17-for-54 (31.5%) from the field.
UMass Lowell (2-12) had three players in double-figures, paced by a double-double from Jasmine McRoy (Gaithersburg, Md.), with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and a game-high 14 points from Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.).
Mount Ida freshman Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) had a team-high nine rebounds to go with her five points and six assists, which led all players and is a career-high for the first year player.
UMass Lowell, who had 11 different players score, shot .385 from the floor (30-for-78), including .463 in the first half, which ended with the hosts up 46-17.
Doucette also had five steals on the night, while the third member of the River Hawks in double figures, sophomore Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.), scored 10 points and dished out five assists.
The River Hawks had 19 steals, and earned a 56-31 edge on the glass.
The Mustangs have a full week to prepare for their next game, in which they will open play in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).
The River Hawks, winners of two in a row, will return to America East play on Thursday at 7:00 pm when they welcome in the Great Danes of the University of Albany.
