Tuesday, February 5, 2013 (Boston, Massachusetts) - Senior guard and Captain Evebonee Acosta (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley) recorded game-high 29 points for the second time this season pacing the Mount Ida College women's basketball team offensively ultimately falling 70-61 in Boston, Massachusetts to host Emerson College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Tuesday evening. The Mustangs fell behind early in the contest but managed chip away and climb back into the race leading by three (47-44) with 11 minutes remaining in the game. The Lions would surge ahead through the final stretch of the contest eventually regaining the double-digit lead closing out the league victory.
Mount Ida falls for the 10th straight time in GNAC competition (0-10) slumping to an overall record of 6-16. With the win the Lions improve to 10-11 on the year and 6-4 in conference play.
The first half saw Elissa Chojnicki drop 14 points, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor with four threes to ignite the Emerson offense. In the half the Lions shot 48 percent from the floor and 83 percent from the line to start pulling away from Mount Ida.
The Mustangs hung tough though as Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) led Mount Ida with 11 points in the half. Overall though the Lions were completely dominant as they put up 16 points in the paint with Kristin Brice putting 10 while Catherine Cloutier collected six points and seven rebounds as Emerson rolled into the half up 37-23.
The second half saw the Mustangs kick into high gear as they stepped up the offense and defense in the half holding Emerson scoreless for over six minutes. MIC kept chipping away at the lead, eventually tying the score at 44-44. Allison O'Connor (Leominster, MA/Leominster) for Mount Ida lit up a three next to take the first lead of the game for the Mustangs and set EC on their heels.
The lead didn't last long though as the Lions fired back and clicked back into sync with Kristin Brice doing work for 11 points as Emerson pounded the paint for 14 points in the half. The bench jumped in to make the difference again though with 10 points with Kelsey Johnson claiming eight of them as EC pulled away with the 70-61 final.
Mount Ida will host their final home game of the season on senior day this Saturday with game time slated for 1:00 p.m. The hosts will also participate in "Play 4 Kay" day to raise awareness for breast cancer.
