ACOSTA DROPS 27 POINTS, MUSTANGS FALL TO CORSAIRS

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Senior guard and Captain Evebonee Acosta (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley) paced the Mount Ida College women's basketball team with 27 points on 10-22 shooting from the floor in a 93-54 non-conference loss against visiting University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Tuesday evening in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Corsairs came armed offensively shooting 58 percent from inside the arc and 43 percent from downtown cruising to victory.  UMD senior forward Colleen Moriarty (Canton, MA/Canton) was impressive recording a game-high 30 points and 10 rebounds for one of two double-doubles for the visitors.

The Mustangs drop their eighth in a row falling to an overall record of 6-14, holding at 0-7 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play while UMD wins their second in a row improving to 14-5 for the year remaining at 5-4 in Little East Conference (LEC) action.

No other Mount Ida player saw double figures in points for the contest to pair with Acosta's performance while sophomore guard Allison O'Connor (Leominster, MA/Leominster) added nine points and four assists.  Sophomore's Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, NY/Maple Hill) and forward Jenn Rafuse (Brockton, MA/Brockton) combined for 11 points and eight assists respectively.

Corsairs sophomore guard Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, MA/Somerville) notched the other UMD double-double with 13 points and 11 dishes on 6-8 shooting going a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe.  Freshman guard/forward Colleen Kane (Arlington, MA/Arlington) tallied 12 points on 4-6 shooting from beyond the three point line while junior forward Erika Bornemann (Canton, MA/Canton) add 11 points for the contest.

The visitors scored the first 14 points, including two trifectas by Kane to start the game, through the first 3:29 of the opening half capped on a Moriarty lay-in.

UMASS-Dartmouth's advantage hovered around the 18 point mark with the Corsairs up 28-10 after another good basket from Moriarty with 11:38 to go before the break.

Mount Ida struggled to keep pace with the surging UMD offense eventually falling behind by a half-high 24 points (51-27) with three minutes left in the stanza.

Acosta would sink the final hoop of the first half for the Mustangs heading into the locker room trailing 55-33.

The hosts were too much to handle for Mount Ida in final frame with UMD ultimately building a game-high 42 point lead with three minutes left in the contest.  The Corsairs, who showcased one of their strongest team's recent memories tonight, would close out the 93-54 non-league win.

The Mustangs will travel to GNAC member Simmons College Thursday evening in Boston, Massachusetts with game time slated for 7:00 p.m. while the visitors will hosts non-conference Lyndon State College the same night starting at 5:30 pm.
