Wednesday, January 24, 2013 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Mount Ida College junior forward Leslie Campbell (Quincy, MA/Quincy) notched a team-high 15 points Wednesday evening in a 74-49 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss to visiting St. Joseph's College (ME) in Newton, Massachusetts for their sixth straight league loss.
The Mustangs are still searching for their first conference victory with an overall record of 6-12, 0-6 in GNAC action while the visitors climb up the league standings (5-2) improving to 11-7 for the year.
The Mustangs had trouble keeping pace with a surging Monk offense watching SJME freshman center Morgan Cahill (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) tally a game-high 24 points on 10-12 shooting dominating underneath the basket. MIC struggled to hold onto the ball coughing up 27 total turnovers for the contest due to very strong defense by the visitors.
Along with a solid performance from Campbell, Mount Ida saw senior guard Evebonee Acosta (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley) and sophomore point guard Allison O'Connor (Leominster, MA/Leominster) add 14 points apiece.
Paired with a solid performance from Cahill, St. Joseph's (ME) saw 16 points and five rebounds from junior forward Lindsay Moore (Barrington, NH/Dover). Monk junior's Abby Young (North Yarmouth, ME/Greely) and Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, ME/Cheverus) notched eight points each combining for 10 boards respectively.
The visitors build a 14 point advantage through the first six minutes of the first half up 20-6 capped on a Young trifecta. Young was 1-2 from downtown on the day although the Monks struggled from beyond the arc at 25 percent for the contest.
St. Joseph's (ME) continued their double digit margin throughout the remainder of the first stanza eventually heading into halftime with a comfortable 37-20 lead.
The Monks would continue to add on to their already wide advantage reaching the 20 point mark early (14:44) in the second frame up 23 (49-26) following a successful lay-in by Moore.
Eventually the visitors went ahead by a game-high 31 points (66-35) with nine minutes remaining in the game after a good lay-up by Young.
It was all but over for Mount Ida at that point watching their opponents cruise through the final ticks of the contest en route to a 74-49 GNAC victory for St. Joseph's (ME).
The Mustangs will host Johnson & Wales University this coming Saturday afternoon at Mount Ida Athletic Center with game time slated for 1:00 p.m. For the visitors, they will play the same afternoon and travel to league foe the University of St. Joseph (CT) with tip-off at the same time.
