MUSTANGS FALL TO CADETS TO OPEN GNAC ACTION SATURDAY

Saturday, January 12, 2013 (Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's basketball team snapped a two game winning streak with a 67-46 loss to visiting Norwich University to open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts in the front end of a double header with the men's team.  The Cadets led the game wire-to-wire with their victory never in doubt building a game-high 25 point lead at the end of the contest to hand the Mustangs the loss.

Mount Ida falls to an overall record of 6-7 dropping their first loss in league play (0-1) while the visitors improve to 7-8 for the year with a conference slate of 1-1.

Mount Ida was led offensively by senior guard and Captain Evebonee Acosta (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley) with 11 points and three assists on 4-12 shooting.  Acosta, who has been the biggest threat for the Mustangs, was in foul trouble early in the contest and didn't get to see the minutes that she was used to.  Junior guard Alicia Ward (North Reading, MA/North Reading) notched a career-high 11 points with four rebounds on 5-6 shooting.  Sophomore's Allison O'Connor (Leominster, MA/Leominster) and Jenn Rafuse (Brockton, MA/Brockton) added eight points each.  The hosts struggled dearly from the floor shooting on 30 percent and made only one shot from downtown on 10 attempts.

For the visitors, sophomore guard Aliah Curry (Windsor, MA/Wahconah Regional) recorded a game-high 14 points with five rebounds while junior forward Erin Clark (Newbury, VT/Oxbow) added 13 points and nine caroms on 6-11 shooting from the floor.

Mount Ida struggled to find a rhythm to open the game and eventually fell behind by 14 points (21-7) after two good free throws from Norwich forward Riley Blankenship (Lyndonville, VT/Lyndonville).

The Mustangs would cut the visiting advantage down to eight points with five minutes left before the midway point trailing 21-13.

The Cadets inflated their lead back into double digits at the break up 34-17 capped on a successful lay-in by freshman forward Hannah Curler (N. Ferrisburgh, VT/Vergennes).

Norwich continued to add to their advantage throughout the entire second half going ahead by 24 (48-24) following a good lay-in by Curler.

It was all but over from there with the Cadets building a game high 25 point lead with under a minute to go in the action eventually closing out the 67-46 GNAC win.

The Mustangs are back in action Tuesday evening against hosting Emmanuel College with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
