Saturday, February 11, 2012 (New Haven, Connecticut) - Four Mount Ida College women's basketball players recorded double figures in a 67-60 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory Saturday afternoon against hosting St. Joseph College (CT) in a crucial league win for post-season position.
The Mustangs capture their third consecutive GNAC bid improving to an overall record of 13-10 with a league slate of 7-4. The women's basketball team sits in the fith spot in the conference standings with two games remaining on the schedule.
Mount Ida was led by senior forward Amanda Bolio (Oxford, MA/Oxford) and sophomore forward/guard Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) with 14 points combining for 10 rebounds as well. Freshman forward Jenn Rafuse (Brockton, MA/Brockton) chipped in 12 points and six caroms while junior transfer Evenbonee Acosta (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley/Gold-Beacom College) notched 10 points respectively.
For the hosts Devon Diliberto (Waterbury, CT) scored a team-high 17 points for Saint Joseph, Mary Hyde (Derby, Conn.) had 12 and Heather Framski (Prospect, CT) scored 11.
Mount Ida shot 14-for-27 (51.9 percent) to the Blue Jays' 9-for-34 (26.5 percent) in building a 37-28 halftime lead.
Saint Joseph came out strong in the early part of the second half and took its first lead since 4-3 when a layup by Lindsay Feducia (Beacon Falls, CT) made it 46-45 with 12:09 left in the game. After a few back-and-forth possessions, Mount Ida took the lead for good at 52-50 on a Bolio jumper with 9:57 to play.
The Blue Jays, however, remained in striking distance and a pair of free throws by Mary Hyde pulled Saint Joseph within 62-60 with 2:23 left. But the Blue Jays ended with three turnovers and two missed shots on their next five possessions.
The Mustangs will host GNAC member Anna Maria College Tuesday evening on "Play 4Kay" day honoring Pink Zone day for breast cancer awareness with game time slated for 6:00 p.m.
