Wednesday, February 1, 2012 (Dartmouth, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's basketball dropped their second loss in the row to the hands of hosting non-conference foe UMASS-Dartmouth Wednesday evening by a score of 70-55 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The Mustangs will look to get back on track this Saturday against visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member Emerson College with game time slated for 1:00 p.m.
Mount Ida was led by junior transfer Evebonee Acosta (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley/Gold-Beacom College) recording a team-high 17 points with four helpers on 7-14 shooting from the floor. Sophomore guard/forward Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) added 12 points going 5-10 for the night. Senior captain's Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) and Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) tallied eight points each combining for 10 rebounds.
Eleven players registered points for UMD during the contest. Junior forward Colleen Moriarty (Canton, MA/Canton HS) led the Corsairs with a game-high 17
points, connecting on 8-of-14 attempts, with six rebounds. Bornemann added 15 points, including 2-of-4 from three-point, with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Freshman guard Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) chipped in nine points, with four rebounds, five assists and six steals. Mount Ida was led
offensively by Acosta with a game-high 17 points, with four rebounds and four assists, while Fedigan notched 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting in the loss.
Tied 8-8 with 14:08 on the clock in the first half, a jumper by Fedigan gave the Mustangs their lone lead of the game. Fedigan connected on a three-pointer
to push Mount Ida's lead to 14-11, but UMD freshman guard Melissa Daigle (Rockland, MA/Rockland HS) nailed a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, tying
the game at 14-14 with 11:29 left in the first half. With a 16-16 tie, the Corsairs closed the first half on a 21-6 run, fueled by 12 points from sophomore center
Erika Bornemann (Canton, MA/Canton HS), taking a 37-22 lead into the break.
A three-pointer by Rivera on the Mustangs opening possession of the second half pulled Mount Ida within 10 points, the closest they would come to the
Corsairs after halftime. UMD rattled off another 18-7 run, gaining their largest lead of the game, a 55-34 advantage with 11:38 to play. The teams matched
shots over the next four minutes, allowing the Corsairs to maintain their lead. Trailing 61-40, Mount Ida rallied with a 15-4 run, behind nine points from Acosta,
to pull within 10 points, 65-55, with 2:06 remaining. The Corsairs closed the game with a 5-0 run from the foul line, securing the 70-55 victory.
UMD forced 23 turnovers while committing only 13, and made 45.9 per cent (28-of-61) of their shots from the field to 44.2 per cent (23-of-52) for Mount Ida.
The Corsairs out rebounded the Mustangs, 36-30.
