Thursday, January 5, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Trailing 26-18 at halftime, the Mount Ida College women's basketball team fell behind visiting non-conference opponent Framingham State University by a game high 15 points in the beginning of the second half unable to recover dropping a 62-52 loss to start second semester action Thursday evening in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs held the lead for the first couple of baskets of the contest but were unable to gain a rhythm falling behind early unable to recuperate.
Mount Ida was led by 12 points a piece from senior guard Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Catherine McAuley/Bryant University) and sophomore forward Amanda Bolio (Oxford, MA/Oxford). The Mustangs lost junior guard Evebonee Acosta (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley/Gold-Beacom College) early due to injury hindering the offensive attack for the contest. All of Bolio's 12 points came off her eight offensive rebounds crashing the boards hard all night. Sophomore Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) chipped in eight points and four assists respectively.
The visitors saw an impressive performance from freshman guard Nicole Bostic (North Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) adding a game high 21 points. Junior Madeleine Park (Blue Hills, ME/George Stevens) added 14 points and eight caroms while sophomore Kristen Hoffman (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) pulled down 10 rebounds.
After taking a 6-3 lead to start the contest with sloppy shooting on both sides, the Mustangs relinquished the advantage falling behind 8-6 through the first seven minutes.
The Rams went up five points (14-9), capped on a Hoffman lay-in, with less than eight minutes to go in the first stanza.
Mount Ida would cut the visitors advantage down to a digit (16-15) with 6:35 remaining before the midway point finalized by a Wood jumper.
Through the next four minutes Framingham State built a seven point lead (23-16) after a sophomore Cassie Liston (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham) lay-up with 1:39 remaining before the break.
The Rams headed into the locker room with a half high eight point advantage with Bostic ending the stanza on a three point play the hard way with her squad up 26-18.
A 7-0 run to start the final frame inflated the visitor's lead to a game high 15 points up 33-18 following Bostic's first of two trifecta's for the contest with 19 minutes on the clock.
The double digit advantage for the Rams would last until the 12-46 mark with Mount Ida cutting the score down to eight points after a Wood three ball down 39-31.
The Mustangs would saddle up a 7-0 run immediately following trailing by a deuce (43-41) capped on a Bolio jumper with eight minutes to go in the game.
Framingham State would not relinquish the lead going back ahead by eight points (51-43) after a Park lay-in with 3:46 remaining.
Solid free throw shooting by the Rams would keep Mount Ida at arms length for the rest of the game eventually solidifying the 62-52 victory for their eighth of the season.
Both teams turned the ball over 13 times each and were very even in the rebounding game throughout the contest. Poor offensive play by the Mustangs shooting only 31 percent from the floor and 45 from the line was their demise for the evening.
Mount Ida drops their second straight falling to an overall record of 6-4 with their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) bid coming this weekend at hosting Norwich University Saturday afternoon with game time slated for 1:00 p.m. in Northfield, Vermont. The Rams are back on track after a loss earlier in the week to Nichols College improving to 8-3 for the year and have yet to start league action in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC).
