The Mount Ida College women's basketball came back from the Keene State College annual tip-off tournament with two losses through action Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs would fall in the opening contest on Friday to tournament hosting Keene State College by a score of 73-59 dropping Mount Ida to an overall record of 0-2.
The Mustangs never led during the contest with the visitors building a double digit advantage through the first six minutes of play never looking back. The Owls led by a game high 23 points (59-36) with 10 minutes to go in the second half sending Mount Ida home with an opening loss.
Mount Ida led offensively by sophomore forward Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) with a game high 15 points and nine caroms. Senior captain and guard Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Catherine McAuley/Bryant University) added 14 points and four assists while senior guard and captain Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) chipped in 12 points and six boards.
In the consolation game, the Mustangs would fall to visiting non-conference Salve Regina University in a close 59-51 loss sending Mount Ida home 0-2.
The Seahawks burst out on a 10-0 run to start the contest leading 10-0 with in the opening two minutes of the contest. Mount Ida cut the lead to three points with 9:42 to go in the first half after a good free throw from senior center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) trailing 14-11.
Salve Regina kept the Mustangs at arm's length inflating their advantage at the end of the first stanza following two good free throw attempts leading by 13 (35-22) heading into the locker room.
Following a game high 14 point lead to start the second half for the Seahawks, the Mustangs cut the visiting lead two to four points at the 13:24 mark after a good lay-in by Rivera (44-40). After a freshman Allison O'Connor (Leominster, MA/Leominster) bucket immediately following, the Mustangs trailed by a deuce with 12 minutes remaining.
The single digit lead for the Seahawks grew a bit and eventually became a nine point advantage with a minute and a half to go 56-47. The Mustangs would ultimately fall 59-51 heading home 0-3 for the season so far.
Mount Ida women's basketball will host non-league Westfield State College this coming Tuesday evening for their final match-up before Thanksgiving break with game time slated for 6:00 p.m.
