Mount Ida College women's basketball junior center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) hit a lay-up with 27 seconds remaining in overtime giving the Mustangs a 56-54 lead and eventually held off hosting Johnson & Wales University Saturday afternoon in Providence, Rhode Island. The win was good for the Mustangs third conference victory of the year and their sixth overall.
Freshman Abigail Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) led the way for Mount Ida with 18 points and seven rebounds while Morvan had a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards in the victory. Junior Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Bryant University) had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Mustangs.
Johnson & Wales was led by freshman Jenna Juron (Burnt Hills, NY) with 16 points, four assists and three rebounds while sophomore Marina Millian (Chester, NY) added 12 points and eight rebounds for JWU. Sophomore Ayla Walter (Mt. Pleasant, SC) chipped in with nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds in the setback.
The two teams traded leads throughout the early stages of the game with the score tied 16-16 with 9:11 left on the clock. The Wildcats then went on a 10-3 run, capped by a layup by junior Kaitlyn Lefort (Pawtucket, RI) to give them the 26-19 lead, their largest of the first half, with 3:30 remaining. The Wildcats would take the 30-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Mount Ida continued to chip away at the JWU lead and took the 38-36 advantage on a jumper by Fedigan with 13:08 remaining. The teams battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the second half before a jumper by Fedigan with just eleven seconds remaining put Mount Ida ahead 48-47. Freshman Samantha Hendrick (Castleton-On-Hudson, NY) then hit one-of-two free throws for JWU to knot the game at 48-48. Mount Ida missed a shot at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime. In the extra session, the teams again traded leads with the contest tied 54-54 with 1:35 left. A layup by Morvan gave the Mustangs the 56-54 lead with: 27 remaining. Mount Ida would then hold on for the two-point victory.
The Mustangs will host non-conference Bay Path College Tuesday evening with tip-off slated for 6:00 p.m.
