The Mount Ida College women's basketball team dropped their sixth consecutive loss falling to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Simmons College 57-50 Saturday afternoon in Boston, Massachusetts. The Mustangs drop to an overall record of 5-14, 3-5 in GNAC play.
Mount Ida had three starters in double-digits—Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) posting 18 points, Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) tallying 11, and Abigail Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) scoring 10 for the Mustangs.
Sophomore Liz O'Connor (Milton, Mass.) went on a rampage in the final three minutes, scoring seven consecutive points to rally the Sharks and push them past the Mustangs.
O'Connor had a total of 17 points, followed closely by classmate Emily Thomas (Cheshire, Conn.) with a 16-point, 10-rebound double double. Junior Alex Acloque (Randolph, Mass.) and freshman Hannah May (Cranston, R.I.) each chipped in six points, while Acloque also grabbed 16 boards.
Co-captain Liane Lantagne (Haverhill, Mass.), celebrating senior day, contributed six rebounds, two points and one block.
The Sharks entered halftime trailing the Mustangs, 34-27. With about thirteen minutes remaining in the second half, Simmons managed to claw back into the game, just one point behind Mount Ida, 41-40, and finally pulled ahead at 11:27 to go when a Thomas layup put the Sharks ahead, 42-41.
Mount Ida answered back with a jumper from Rivera to draw ahead again, 43-42. But two points from an O'Connor layup at 9:41 to go pushed Simmons ahead, 44-43, and the Sharks held the lead for the remainder of the contest.
Mount Ida will host Rivier for a GNAC game on Wednesday at 6:00pm
