WOMEN'S HOOPS DROPS FIRST GNAC BID OF SEASON 67-55

The Mount Ida College women's basketball team dropped their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss of the season to the hands of hosting conference foe Emerson College, 67-55, Saturday afternoon in Boston, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 5-9 falling to 2-1 in conference competition.

Mount Ida was led by junior center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) adding 20 points and 15 boards good for her first double-double of the year.  Junior transfer Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Bryant University) and junior Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) each added 11 points.

Emerson College guard Elissa Chojnicki (Dover, NH) scored 19 points while Olivia DiNucci (Pittsburgh, PA) just missed a double-double for Lions with 13 points and nine rebounds, and added two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

After trailing most of the first half, the Lions rallied from a 29-22 deficit over the last 2:37 to tie the score at 31 on a Shannon Norton (Middletown, NJ) three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining in the stanza.  Emerson extended the run to begin the second half scoring the first eight points of the period.

The Lions stretched the lead to 45-35 on a traditional three-point play by Kathy Andrade (Hull, MA).  Andrade had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The Mustangs came storming back, however, with an 11-3 spurt that closed the gap to 48-46 on a layup by Morvan.  Chojnicki dropped in a layup to move the lead back to four points, but Abigail Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) scored two of her 10 points to keep the Mustangs within a bucket.

Chojnicki again came up big for Emerson canning a trifecta, and Andrade followed with two free throws to move the lead to 55-48.  Mount Ida was never able to pull any closer than six points over the final five minutes.
