WOMEN'S HOOPS BACK ON TRACK WITH 48-42 VICTORY

The Mount Ida College women's basketball team got back on track over the weekend with a 48-42 non-conference victory over hosting Gordon College Saturday afternoon.  The Mustangs improve to an overall record of 3-6 while the Fighting Scots continue to skid at 1-8 heading into the semester break.

Trailing 22-17 early in the second half, Mount Ida went on a decisive 9-0 run capped off by a 3-pointer from junior Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central), which gave them a 26-22 lead. The game experienced five ties until the 8:43 mark when the Scots regained the lead on a Kayla Pacheco layup. Mount Ida junior center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) hit consecutive jumpers to put the Mustangs back in the lead, and they held on the rest of the way.

Pacheco saw her first action of the season for Gordon after returning from injury and she picked up a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Sara Schwanke joined Pacheco in double figures with 11 points while freshman forward Lauren Kranyak snared a whopping 19 rebounds. Gordon held a 54-31 edge on rebounds and limited the Mustangs to 26 percent shooting. The Mustangs offset those disadvantages by creating 27 Gordon turnovers and committing only 10 of their own.

Rivera led Mount Ida with nine points while junior transfer Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Bryant University) and freshman forward Abigail Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) added eight apiece. Rivera also added four steals.

The Mustangs have one more contest before the midway break this coming Tuesday at non-conference Anna Maria College with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m.
