The Mount Ida College women's basketball team participated in the Curry College tournament over this past weekend taking two non-conference losses to the hosting Colonels falling 73-54 in the opening round Friday night. The Mustangs would face visiting UMASS-Dartmouth in the consolation game taking a 74-62 loss to the Corsairs on Saturday. Mount Ida has yet to solidify a victory coming home with a 0-3 record but has yet to play a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest.
The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after a jumper by junior center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge). Curry responded with a 30-4 run that began with a layup by senior forward Danyel Cousins (Brunswick, ME) and was capped off with layup by senior forward Cortney Robinson (Brockton, MA). The Colonels took their biggest lead of the game (41-15) after a jumper by freshman guard Katie King (Dorchester, MA) with 10 seconds left in the first frame.
With 10:01 remaining in the second half, the Mustangs trimmed the lead to 10 (52-42) after a pair of free throws by junior forward Rachel Gilbert (Corunna, IN/Dekalb). Curry answered with an 8-0 run that began with a pair of made free throws by Cousins and was capped off by a pair of made free throws from sophomore forward Julia Scrubb (Stowe, VT).
Mount Ida was led by junior guard Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Bryant University) with 21 points. She was followed by Morvan who contributed 12 points. Freshman forward Abigail Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Cousins led the Colonels with a game-high 23 points. King added added 14 and Scrubb chipped in with 11. Cousins and Robinson led Curry on the glass with nine rebounds apiece.
Following the loss, the Mustangs fell in the consolation round against UMASS-Dartmouth while the Corsairs (1-2) picked up their first win of the season winning 74-62.
UMASS-Dartmouth began the game with a 7-0 run that would give them a lead they would never relinquish. The run started with a made free throw by junior guard Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, MA) and was capped off with a layup by freshman forward Erika Bornemann (Canton, MA). The Corsairs' biggest lead of the first half came with one second remaining, after a layup by freshman forward Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA), giving UMass Dartmouth a 43-29 edge at intermission.
In the second period, the Corsairs took their biggest lead of the game (59-33) with 10:50 remaining in regulation after a layup by junior guard Jessica Underwood (Dorchester, MA). Mount Ida went on a 7-0 run that spanned from 2:35 left in the second frame to 0:36 remaining in regulation, to cut the deficit to nine (71-62), but could pull no closer.
Bornemann led Umass Dartmouth with a game-high 21 points. Sophomore forward Colleen Moriarty (Canton, MA) added 19 and Houtmann chipped in with 14. Bornemann racked up a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs were led by junior guard Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Bryant University) with 17 points. Junior guard Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) contributed 11. Junior center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Mount Ida women's hoops transfer Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Bryant University) was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Mustangs will travel to non-conference Westfield State University Tuesday night with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m.
