Mount Ida College women's basketball senior forward Cherie Parisi (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) netted a double-double with 28 points and 16 rebounds claiming an 88-56 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over hosting St. Joseph College (CT) Saturday at the O'Connell Center in New Haven, Connecticut. The Mustangs improve to 8-10 overall and capture their first GNAC contest of the season. The Blue Jays fall to 3-12 on the year, and are 0-5 in conference play.
The first half was fiercely competitive with eight lead changes. Saint Joseph junior Nathalie Mastarreno (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored 11 first-half points, though Mount Ida led 36-25 at halftime. The Blue Jays then pulled within 44-38 with 13:45 to play. But 16 points from Parisi and 54 percent shooting (21-for-39) from the Mustangs in the second half proved too much to overcome. Mount Ida also out-rebounded Saint Joseph 69-36.
Junior Ilaria Schiano (Wallingford, Conn.) scored a game-high 25 points for Saint Joseph, which included making 13 of 15 free throw attempts. Mastarreno finished with 19 points, five steals and four assists.
Freshman Missy Collins (East Hartford, CT/East Hartford) scored 19 points off the bench for Mount Ida and sophomore Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) had 16 points and 16 rebounds good for a double-double.
The Mustangs will host Suffolk University this coming Thursday night starting at 6:00 p.m. for more GNAC action.
