The Mount Ida College women's basketball team captured a 68-60 non-conference victory over Becker College Tuesday night in Worcester, Massachusetts for their third win of the season. The Mustangs improve to 3-3 overall and have yet to play a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) so far this year.
The Mustangs held a strong eight point advantage early in the contest up 12-4 after a lay-in by junior Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union) around the 15 minute mark.
Mount Ida eventually continued to clutch a significant margin from the Hawks building the lead to a game high 13 points up 26-13 after a lay-up by sophomore center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) with 5:25 to go before the break.
Becker ultimately cut the lead back to a single digit deficit trailing by nine after netting the last bucket of the first half on a jumper in the lane. The Mustangs eventually held onto the 36-27 advantage going into the locker room.
The Hawks started the second stanza with an 11-2 run taking their first lead of the contest up 40-38 with 15:19 showing on the clock. Mount Ida coughed up five turnovers in the five minute span giving the hosts a chance to get back into the game.
Mustang Head Coach Jack Casey called a time out immediately to stop the bleeding and regroup his squad. His tactic worked with Mount Ida pouring on a 11-2 run regaining the nine point advantage with a barrage of offense led by senior Nicole Casimiro (Lee, NH/Oyster River) and freshman Missy Collins (East Hartford, CT/East Hartford) leading 53-44 at the nine minute mark.
The visitors kept their advantage building it up to 12 points with 6:11 to go in the game after a jumper by sophomore Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central). Mount Ida eventually closed out the contest winning 68-60 good for their third victory of the season.
Morvan chipped in with 12 points grabbing six caroms along with three blocks while Casimiro netted a game high 23 points with four steals. Tisbert, Collins, and senior Ashley Boyd (Hanson, MA/Hanson-Whitman) all added six points apiece.
The Mustangs will host Gordon College this coming Thursday for more non-conference action starting at 6:00 p.m.
