Men’s Volleyball Drops GNAC Match After Lengthy Third Set

BOSTON, Mass. – Despite a third set that went to several extra points to decide, Mount Ida dropped a 3-0 decision at Emerson College on Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's volleyball action.

Sophomore James Ames (West Hartford, Conn.) racked up 10 kills, but it wasn't enough to stop the Lions from sweeping Mount Ida 25-16, 25-13 and 29-27, dropping the Mustangs to 8-16 on the year (2-9 GNAC).

Jackson Wiley's 13 kills and Dimitri Gorenc's five block assists helped Emerson improve to 9-10 overall and 4-6 in the GNAC.

The Mustangs will turn their attention to Thursday's showdown with cross-town rival Lasell College, which will also be Senior Night at Mount Ida Athletic Center, when the Mustangs will honor their graduating class of 2014 at 6:00 pm.

On Wednesday, one of those seniors, Nick Schibi (Torrington, Conn.) added eight kills, while his classmate Nick Melillo (North Haven, Conn.) had four kills himself and made just one hitting error on ten attempts.

Sophomore Brady Rodriguez (Longwood, Fla.) set up 18 assists and served one of Mount Ida's four aces, while also co-leading the team with six digs, along with Jimmy Wessel (DeKalb, Ill.) and Dennis Miranda (Hialeah, Fla.).

After dropping the first two sets, Mount Ida was right in the third game, which featured ten tie scores and four lead changes. The Mustangs held a game-point at 24-22, but Emerson fought back to tie the score and held firm to the 29-27 win.

The Lions continue GNAC action tomorrow as they set to host No. 5 Rivier at 7 p.m. in Boston at Emerson's Brown-Plokfer Gym.
