Men’s Volleyball Swings Past Amcats in Tri-Match Split

PAXTON, Mass. – Mount Ida picked up their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's volleyball victory on Saturday afternoon by taking a 3-1 victory over Anna Maria in the second game of a conference tri-match hosted by the Amcats.

The Mustangs improve to 8-14 overall and are now 2-7 in conference play after dropping a 3-0 decision to Lasell in their first game of the day.

Game 2: Mount Ida 3, Anna Maria 0

Mount Ida seized control of the match by taking the first sets 25-10 and 25-14, then, after yielding a 25-20 defeat in the third set, bounced back to close the match out with a 25-22 fourth set margin.

Sophomore James Ames (West Hartford, Conn.) led the way with 18 kills and a .314 hitting percentage, while Nick Schibi (Torrington, Conn.) also hit above .300 and pitched in 14 kills.

Sophomore Brady Rodriguez (Longwood, Fla.) handed out 34 assists and added four kills without making an error (.667). He also served six aces, of which the Mustangs had 13. Dennis Miranda (Hialeah, Fla.) served two aces himself and had eight kills, while Ames and Jimmy Wessel (DeKalb, Ill.) led the team with five digs apiece.

The Amcats (1-11, 0-7 GNAC) were led by Dylan Copeland, who had 10 kills and 11 digs, and got 18 assists from Michael Gaudelli.

Game 1: Lasell 3, Mount Ida 0

The Lasers proved too much for Mount Ida, particularly in the first game, in which they hit .647, making just one attacking error en route to a 25-15 victory. Lasell used 25-14 and 25-16 decisions to complete the sweep and improve to 16-5 overall (5-3 GNAC).

Rodriguez and Nick Melillo (North Haven, Conn.) were the high scorers against the Lasers, pitching in with five kills apiece, while Schibi and Michael McCullough (Southborough, Mass.) adding three kills each and the sophomore McCullough setting up 13 assists while not making an attacking error.

Miranda led Mount Ida with four digs, and Rodriguez served the Mustangs' only two aces of the set.

A balanced attack saw Drew Caruso and Dan Raffol each collect seven kills to lead the Lasers, while Andrew Glenn notched 20 assists.

After an extended road trip, the Mustangs return home on Tuesday night for a 6:00 pm game against GNAC foe Emmanuel.
