Men’s Volleyball Goes Undefeated at Regis Tournament

WESTON, Mass. – In a mini-tournament hosted by Regis College on Saturday, the Mount Ida College men's volleyball team went 2-0, taking matches against CCRI and Saint Joseph's Brooklyn to improve their record to 6-5 on the season.

Sophomore Brady Rodriguez (Longwood, Fla.) was effective both setting and hitting for the Mustangs. He had 17 assists and eight kills, as well as four service aces in the first match victory over CCRI, which Mount Ida took 3-1 in four very competitive sets (25-22, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23).

Rodriguez hit .545 in the win over Community College of Rhode Island, making just two errors on 11 attempts.

In their second game of the day, which Mount Ida won in straight sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-14), Rodriguez had a team-high nine kills and served five aces. After splitting time earlier, he ceded the setting duties to his classmate Michael McCullough (Southborough, Mass.), who had 29 assists after setting up 18 points and serving two aces of his own against CCRI.

Sophomore James Ames (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Mustangs against the Knights, posting a hitting line of 13-4-28 (.321) in the four set victory. Ames also had nine digs, matched by Dennis Miranda (Hialeah, Fla.), and second only to the work of sophomore libero Jimmy Wessell (DeKalb, Illl.), who had ten digs in the victory.

Senior Nick Schibi (Torrington, Conn.) added ten kills and made just two errors, hitting .348. The captain would come back with another strong performance against St. Joseph's , contributing seven kills.

Junior Dakota Howell (Mesa, Ariz.) had a career high five kills against the Bears, and made just one error on eight attempts, hitting .500.

Ames had five more kills in the night cap for the Mustangs, to go with six digs, while Corey Brindamour (Barrington, R.I.) and Rodriguez co-led the Mustangs with eight digs apiece.

The Mustangs will return to action with six straight home games, starting next Wednesday at 6:00 pm when they host Daniel Webster at Mount Ida Athletic Center.
