MUSTANGS CAPTURE SECOND GNAC VICTORY

April 4, 2013 (New Haven, Connecticut)- The Mount Ida College men's volleyball team captured their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the season against the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College in a five game set by scores of 28-26, 25-21, 22-25, 25-27, and 18-16.  With the win, the Mustangs move to (6-19, 2-10 GNAC) while the Falcons fall to (8-15, 0-13 GNAC).

Spencer Hastings (Orlando, FL/Timber Creek) led all players with 32 kills on the night while hitting a spectacular .473 and adding 11 digs.  Freshman middle hitter Justin Rhoden (Corona, CA/Corona Centennial) finished behind Hastings with 13 kills on the match.  Freshman setter Brady Rodriguez (Orlando, FL/Bishop Moore) set a record with 62 assists in a single match.  The previous record was fifty-five.

The Falcons were led offensively by Glenn Johnson (Newington, CT/Newington) who tallied 27 kills, 16 digs and five blocks in the thriller.  Carlos Torres (Adjuntas, Puerto Rico/Egg Harbor Township) had 39 assists on the game.

The Mustangs and Falcons had solid hitting performances on the night, but in the end the Mustangs would pull away with an 18-16 fifth set victory.

During the first set, the score was knotted at 26 before a kill by Hastings and an Albertus attacking error secured the win for Mount Ida.  In set two, Ida took the early 13-9 lead before extending its advantage to 22-14.  The Falcons would battle back, but it wouldn't be enough as Kenny Jean (Dorchester, MA/Brighton) would end the set with a kill.

Falling behind 2-0 in the first two sets, Albertus would battle chip away and win the next two sets, tying the game at 2-2.

In the decisive game five set, the Mustangs were on control leading 8-4 before the Falcons were able to tie the set at fourteen.  Both teams would go back and forth before kills by Rhoden and Nick Schibi (Torrington, CT/O. Wolcott Regional Voc. Tech) would end the game and secure the victory for the Mustangs.

Mount Ida will get back to work on Saturday, April 6, with a GNAC tri-match at Emerson College with the first game slated for 12:00 p.m.  The Falcons will host GNAC opponent Emmanuel College at noon.
