Thursday, March 28, 2013 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Mount Ida College men's volleyball senior outside hitter and Captain Spencer Hastings (Orland, FL/Timber Creak) recorded six kills on 22 attempts with two solo blocks in the final home game of his career in a 3-0 loss to visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member Emmanuel College Thursday evening in Newton, Massachusetts falling by scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-15.
Hastings, who became the third player in the history of the program to eclipse 1,000 kills two weeks prior, was honored before the contest for his contributions and dedication through the past four years with the Mustangs. Hastings took over as second all-time in kills currently sitting with 1,036 behind leader and 2007 graduate Timothy Hughes (1,791).
The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 5-19 with a 1-9 league slate with the Saints improving to 13-12 for the year snatching their fourth GNAC win in a row (8-1) sitting in second place in GNAC standings behind Rivier University heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
Following Hastings final home performance of his career, junior Nick Schibi (Torrington, CT/O. Wolcott Regional) recorded seven kills on 11 attempts with a .273 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Nick Melillo (North Haven, CT/North Haven) chipped in four kills and two digs followed by 17 assists from freshman setter Brady Rodriguez (Longwood, FL/Bishop Moore).
For the visitors, sophomore outside hitter Ashanti Jackson (Sacramento, CA/Monterey Trail) tallied a team-high seven kills on 11 attempts with only two errors and an impressive .455 hitting percentage. Senior setter Nick Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) dished out 28 helpers and six service aces to lead the contest.
The Mount Ida men's volleyball team will travel to GNAC member Albertus Magnus College next Thursday with a weekend off with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
