Mount Ida College men's volleyball senior outside hitter and Captain Spencer Hastings (Orlando, FL/Timber Creak) added a team-high 13 kills on 30 attempts with seven digs en route to a 3-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss to visiting rival Lasell College Tuesday evening in Newton, Massachusetts by scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-23.
After capturing their first league win against Albertus Magnus College this past Saturday (3-0), the Mustangs fall to an overall record of 5-18 with a conference slate of 1-9. The hosts will face GNAC member Emmanuel College Thursday evening in their final home game of the season starting at 6:00 p.m. on senior day to honor Hastings as the lone veteran to be recognized.
After a two quick losses in the opening sets by the visitors, The Mustangs fought hard in game three falling short at the end to surrender the 3-0 GNAC sweep loss, their ninth league loss for 2013.
Along with a solid overall performance from Hastings, Mount Ida saw five kills each from junior's Nick Mellilo (North Haven, CT/North Haven) and Nick Schibi (Torrington, CT/O. Wolctt Regional) with Mellilo adding seven digs respectively. Freshman setter Brady Rodriguez (Longwood, FL/Bishop Moore) ran the Mustang offense dishing out a game-high 27 assists with six digs.
For the Lasers, senior outside hitter Alex Mill (Danville, NH/Timberlane) recorded a game-high 14 kills on 22 attempts with zero errors for an impressive .636 hitting percentage. Lasell freshman setter Ryan Jackson (Massillon, OH/Jackson) distributed 22 assists with three solo blocks while sophomore middle hitter Julius Rosario (Stoughton, MA/Brockton) denied a game-high four solo blocks.
