SCHIBI LEADS MUSTANGS, MEN'S VOLLEYBALL WINS 3-0

Monday, February 4, 2013 (Cambridge, Massachusetts) - Mount Ida College men's volleyball junior outside hitter Nick Schibi (Torrington, CT/O. Wolcott Regional Voc. Tech) recorded a match-high seven kills leading the Mustangs to their third straight victory of the season over hosting non-conference foe Lesley University winning 3-2 by scores of 25-12, 25-16, and 25-18.  MIC, who captured a Silver Bracket Championship last weekend to open the season competing in the SUNY-IT tournament, improves to an overall record of 3-2, tripling their win total from last season under the direction of second year Head Coach Craig Martin.  The hosts drop to 0-4 still searching for their first victory.

With Lesley trailing 7-6 in the first set, Mount Ida scored three unanswered points to give them a four-point cushion, 10-6. That sparked an impressive run of offense as the Mustangs outscored the Lynx 15-5 throughout the rest of the opening game, rolling to a 25-12 win.

In the second set, the Lynx opened up a 3-0 advantage behind a kill from freshman Spencer Irwin (Somers, NY) and aggressive serving from sophomore Herbin Berreondo (Brighton, MA). The Mustangs climbed right back into to, capitalizing on back-to-back Lesley errors and a kill by Schibi. The teams would exchange points before Lesley was able to catch a 13-10 lead following two Melvin Morales (Chelsea, MA) kills. Mount Ida fought back to tie it at 15-15 and then scored six straight behind the service of junior Nick Melillo (North Haven, CT/North Haven). The Mustangs finished the set on a 10-1 run.

The Mustangs took advantage of some early Lesley errors in the third set to take a 7-3 lead and never looked back. With the score 14-10, Mount Ida would go on an 8-2 spurt to take a commanding 22-12 lead. The Lynx would then score six of the next eight points, but it was too little too late as the Mustangs closed out the match with a 25-18 third set victory.

Morales had a team-high four kills for the Lynx while freshman Jess Cherry (Lancaster, PA) finished with nine assists. Freshman C.J. Sutton (Billerica, MA) had a match-high 12 digs while Irwin and senior Sean Randall (Fremont, CA) each had ten.

Schibi had a match-high seven kills for the Mustangs while freshman Jadon Jahnsen Tuilosega (Hemet, CA/West Valley) finished with eight. Freshman Jimmy Wessel (DeKalb, IL/DeKalb) finished with 10 digs and freshman Brady Rodriguez (Longwood, FL/Bishop Moore) had a match-high 17 assists.

Mount Ida men's volleyball will host their first home contest of the season against M.I.T. Wednesday evening with first service coming at 6:00 p.m.
