HASTINGS TALLIES 11 KILLS, MUSTANGS FALL TO SAINTS 3-0

Thursday, March 29, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Mount Ida College men's volleyball junior hitter Spencer Hastings (Orlando, FL/Timber Creak) recorded a game-high 11 kills in a 3-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss to visiting powerhouse Emmanuel College Thursday evening by scores of 16-25, 16-25 and 14-25. 

The Mustangs drop their seventh league loss and their 12 straight overall falling to an overall record of 1-17 going 0-7 in GNAC action.  Emmanuel holds the second spot in the conference standings improving to 12-9 with a 10-2 league record.

Mount Ida hung with the Saints in game one but constant errors down the stretch handed them the 1-0 opening loss by a score of 25-16.  Game two and three was dominated by Emmanuel wining 26-16 in the second set and 25-14 in the last to complete the sweep.

Along with Hastings, Mount Ida was led by senior hitter McCoy Arnoux (Brockton, MA/Brockton) with eight kills on 14 attempts with only two errors and one block assist.  Sophomore Nick Melillo (North Haven, CT/North Haven) chipped in two kills while three other Mustangs adding one kill each.  Senior setter Franklin McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) dished out 20 assists with junior Ricky Oliveira (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) adding five digs respectively.

For the visitors, junior setter Nick Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) recorded seven kills converting on every attempt he had with no errors along with 12 dishes.  Freshman hitter Austin Cockerill (Darien, CT/Darien) chipped in six kills on 13 attempts while freshman Sean Baxley (Saint James, NY/Smithtown East) added nine assists. 

Mount Ida will travel to Albertus Magnus College Saturday afternoon for a GNAC tri-match with the Falcons and visiting league number one seed Rivier College with game one time slated for 1:00 p.m.
